Fat Girls Can't Run, Or Can They? - Overcoming & Becoming

Tonight I embarked on a new adventure. I joined a running club. Now, I'm not quite sure what I was thinking. I was always the fat girl in gym class who hated the one-mile run. Maybe I overdosed on Christmas cookies and staged my own intervention because the thought of exercising in 20-something degree weather didn't even scare me away. I layered myself in clothing, feeling more like sausage in casing. Then I kissed my husband goodbye saying "I will either come home stronger or dead." [Athletes can be drama queens, too, can't they?]

The ladies of the "Running Because I Can" club were very welcoming. Most are seasoned runners who ran a minimum of 3 miles tonight. As the beginner, I was fully aware of my limits. I stuck to my plan to walk, except for the three one-minute intervals I tried running. Two miles of walking later, I felt pretty good about my accomplishment. I couldn't help but drive away thinking "I'm so proud of you." I guess fat girls who hated gym class can overcome and become athletes after all. Stay tuned...
